5A - Identifying Local Opportunities 

(I) Title: The Santa Fe Riverfest
Description of the story: The articles talks about how the droughts in Gainesville are effecting the aquatic ecosystems of the springs by decreasing the water flow while increasing the amount of nutrient being loaded into the springs. In addition, polluted ground water from residential and agricultural system also has these similar negative effects on the springs. These negative effects degrade the recreational experiences of the spring users and. There is, however, can organization called Our Santa Fe River is trying to bring awareness to this issue by holding a RiverFest song writing contest for the past eight years. 
Description of the problem presented: The problem that is present is the fact that natural habibits are being polluted due to drought and the nutrient from agriculture being dumped into the spring. With this prolonging, these ecosystems will be extinct. In addition, we are no longer have the privilege to enjoy these recreational experiences.
Who has the problem: The problems mostly pertain to those who enjoy going to the spring. The problem also extend to most of Alachua County most of the water that is utilized for everyday activities come from these springs.

(II) Title: Commissioner Adam Putnam Provides Update on Florida Wildfire Activity
Description of the story: The article discusses about forest fire and gives update on the active wildfires in Florida. According to the article there are currently 33 active wildfires. Wildfires are such a danger that the local Florida Forest Service suggested that citizens never burn anything on a windy day, always keep a water source and suppression tools when burning yard debris, and other rules that correlate with the Florida’s outdoor burning laws.
Description of the problem presented: The problem is how quickly forest fire can be spread and started, especially in the summertime. The problem could be due to multiple of factors, such as being uneducated about how easily fire can spread and lack of regulations.  
Who has the problem: People who lives near forest or in hot and dry climate, like here in Gainesville, are most affected by this problem.


(III) Title: Officers Share coffee, Conversation
Description of the story: Police officer would go to the Alachua McDonalds can serve coffee to ordinary citizens. The officers would interact and communicate with local citizens to reinsure them that they are just as fellow human trying to protect and build a better community. By doing this, the police officers are breaking down the barriers. The police officers are doing this to take part in a program started in 2011 in Hawthorne and was later adopted in other cities.
Description of the problem presented: The problem that is described in this article is that there is a barrier between ordinary citizen and police officer. Most people who called police officers are often intimidated by them or the people do not treat the police officers as another human being.
Who has the problem: This mostly has to do with everyone, due to the fact that most of us of a preconceive notion that police officers are tough and unsociable.

(IV) Title: Free Tire Roundup

Description of the story: The articles talks about recycling more specific recycling tire. Residents of Alachua County can bring their tire to the event at no charge, however, the event will only except the tires and not the trim. According to the article, the rubber from the tire then can be turn into rubber mulch and asphalt additives.
Description of the problem presented: Within this article, there are two problems that can be extracted. The first problem is the lack of recycling for tires or rubber in general and the second problem is that advertisement regarding the problem.
Who has the problem: This problem pertains to everyone who has a car, students who have a bike, truck drivers, and especially car auto repair shops.

(V) Title: Opposition to Proposed County Stormwater Regulation
Description of the story: The Alachua city is facing a problem regarding the high nitrogen levels in the stormwater which cause the overgrowth of algae. The high level of nitrogen is also due to agriculture. It was founded that 73% of nitrogen found in the Santa Fe River is from agriculture

The city is, however, trying to proposed a plan for this problem. The commission is trying to bush the project but the lack to knowledge of what it will actually take to accomplish the task.
Description of the problem presented: Similar to the first article, this article also discusses about the pollution of the rivers, especially the nitrogen pollution of the Santa Fe River. This is due to the continuous use of nitrogen in fertilization which deposit nitrogen in the river.  
Who has the problem: The mostly pertain the citizen of Alachua County or anyone that use the river as a source of water.

  1. Hi Tan. I think you put a great deal of time and effort into your post for this assignment. I think you chose great stories which had a problem integrated into it and correctly identified the intended person who has that problem in each. I think if you added more to your summary it would add more to your post but in all, it was well done!

  2. I found the articles about the drought(The Santa Fe Riverfest) and the police officers(Officers Share coffee, Conversation) very interesting. For the drought article I found it interesting because I did not know there was a drought or any sort of disruption regarding water in the Gainesville area. I believe the opportunity that presents itself is if you owned a company that could create a solution for this and present it to whom ever would allow the construction or alteration of the landscape to fix the water issue. Regarding the police officer article I have been wanting to build a paintball arena here in Tallahassee and I want to have our mission statement be about uniting a community. The area would give discount admissions to local law enforcement, schools, and town employees. The idea is to have all different types of people mingle and plan. Our event would be extremely interactive and each day of running will be about lessons.
