12A – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

12A – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Interviews:

Kelly:
From the interview, I learned that when she is hungry and thirsty the drinks that come to her mind are boba, frappicino, or a WaWa chai tea. The reason that these drinks came into the mind is because of their good taste. She said that the boba from the milktea gives her an illusion of being full. The moment that she thinks about the drinks the most is when she is walking back from class or before studying. She like asking friends for drink recommendation rather than searching online. However, if she has to search online then she would search “good drinks in the city” or she would look at the review online. In addition, she said that she is willing to try new drinks as long as the price is reasonable for its quality.
Lam:
From the interview, I learned that he thinks of water whenever he is thirsty and hunger. Opposite to Kelly, he does not think that milktea fills him up thus he has to eat something when he drinks milktea if he is hunger. Usually after doing physical activities, is when he thinks about drinking a sweet drink. He also like getting recommendations from friends and if the café is convenient for him to go to. He is reminded of sweet drink when he is craving something sweet. He also said that the taste is the most important things that he looks for in a drink and that he prefers drinks that are sweet.
Michael:
From the interview, I learned that he prefers a sweet coffee and something to eat when he is hungry. Similarly, to Lam, he also thinks that milktea does not fill him up rather it is a drink to get after a meal. He said that he thinks about it the most when he is doing homework, walking, or after doing something that involve physical labor. He, on the other hands, like looking at the reviews online to see if the café’s atmosphere is nice and if the drinks taste good.

Draw conclusions:

Based on the three interviews, people both uses online searches and recommendations from friend in order to discover new cafés and drinks. From Kelly, Lam, and Michael responses, the need usually arises when they are studying or after doing physical activities.

  1. Were you able to decide on a segment of the population that connected these three interviews? If so what is it? I think you did in-depth interviews since you were able to find out actual drinks they prefer and how the drink satisfies their needs. Was there anything that appeared shocking to you from the buyer behavior that you noted?

  2. Your friend said that when he is hungry and thirsty he thinks of water? I see your drink has the idea of a smoothie. Something that does quench your thirst and suppresses the feeling of hunger. Your drink could be marketed to different smoothie shops. Maybe not the name brand ones such as smoothie king, but the smaller family owned shops that offer diverse types of drinks and food. I like the details you were able to find from your friends regarding what they do when they are hungry or thirsty. If its true that your product has no current competitors you could really tap into a strong market until others catch onto the wave. After doing a research product on GoPro I really learned how competitors from extremely strong companies will develop products similar to yours to just steal your client base and make money for themselves. You could sell your product in many different sizes. Smaller cheaper bottles to get exposure and larger bottles for the established clientele that want to have larger quantities and want the minor discount the bulk purchase offers.

  3. Hi Tan. I see you thoroughly interviewed your three people. There is an agreement which was reached which indicated that everyone prefers a type of drink that you are offering after they are doing something physical or tiring. If you provide this drink to them in this setting, more customers will be inclined to enter your business.

  4. Hello Tan, great job on this assignment. You did a thorough job with your writing and interviews. I thought it was interesting that two of the people you interviewed did not seem to want any milktea when they were hungry. Do you think owning a milktea business could last for a long time or do you think it would go out of business?

  5. Great post Tan-- short, but detailed. I've never tried milktea, but it sounds likes something that would taste good with sweats. I think that your best bet is to target people studying as opposed to active people. People like to have sweats while their studying, and milktea would be a nice beverage as an accompaniment. People who are performing physical activities would probably want water or gatorade.
