20A – Growing Your Social Capital

20A – Growing Your Social Capital

1)    Nhi (Domain Expert)
She is an owner of a café that sell milktea thus she is very knowledge about operating a café. I personally know this person thus we have been in contact for a while now. I asked them to see if the idea would attract customers especially here in Gainesville. I told her about the demographic of Gainesville and she said that it would be fitting to open a café like the one I have been discussing about. This person will ultimately aid me in finding ways to operate the café smoothing.
2)    TeaStori (Market Expert)
This is a local store here in Gainesville and they partner a lot with the organizations here on campus such as VSO and AASU. TeaStori fill this spot because they are very knowledge about the market and know how to market especially to students, which is what I am also trying to accomplish. I found them online and went to the café to have a drink. I asked them about the idea of my café and how they market their café. They said that partnering with organizations on campus is a way of marketing themselves. With talking to them, I am able to find and different ways of marketing the cafes and talking to the same organization that they are talking to in order to spread the word.

3)    Chi (Supplier)
She is an owner of cafes and supplies materials and recipes to other smaller cafes or other who would like to open their own cafes. I also personally know this person and she was the one that actually give me the idea of opening a café here in Gainesville. I asked the person how she makes her drink and the different recipes that she has. She told me about making the drinks and where to get similar supplies and what to make the different bobas. She will help me with developing new drinks and possibly supplies me with the ingredients to make the milktea.

Finally: Reflect. This experience helped me determine who is the best people to ask to advice regarding the business. Rather than asking family members, it is best to ask people who have experience in the field. They know how to approach different situation and how a café operates which gives me more insight on this business. The more insight I have the better I will be when opening a café.

  1. Hey Tan,
I think you chose good people for this activity. Since Nhi is a domain expert I think you should partner up with her when creating your business. She can most likely guide you along the way. I am surprised that TeaStori helped you out since you would technically be in competition with them. I think the idea they gave you is excellent because they do not have to market it the product themselves.

  2. Hi Tan. You put much effort and detail into this post. You chose people wisely and made them fit into each category. I think you are correct in having to ask people who are outside of your contact for advice on this as it will give you insight into your specific needs. This will only be of insight to you as you will be getting expertise on the field.

  3. Hello Tan, so it looks like you have good friends that are knowledgeable about what your business is going to be providing. Through this assignment it really makes us think about developing professional partnerships and what we need to look for. We are scouting out a person that heads a different department within the same field of our organization or at least something similar. Utilizing your personal relationships will help with further networking if needed.
