21A – Reading Reflection No. 2
Book: Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck
1)
What
was the general theme or argument of the book?
There
was not really a theme or argument in the book rather the book took on the
approach of contrasting the two different mindsets, the fixed and growth
mindset. The book examined the two different mindsets under different condition
and in different people, such as in athletes or businessmen.
2)
How
did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning
in ENT 3003?
The book
enhanced my learning in ENT 3003 by providing the way successful businessmen
approach their successes and failure in two different ways. People who has a
growth mindset views failure in a transaction is a motivation to success in the
further and does not take the failure personally, which is different from that
of the people with a fixed mindset.
3)
If
you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what
would that exercise involve?
One
exercise that I would implement is to approach your business idea from two the
two different mindsets and examine with the questions of, which mindset will be
more successful in business, the fixed or growth mindset.
4)
What
was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other
words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
The book
talked about psychology which I knew a little of. However, as someone who is
fascinated by the field of psychology, most of the book was a ‘aha’ moment for
me. It was interesting to see how the two different mindsets view successes and
failures. One takes it very personally while the other sees the failure as a
personal gain and something that the person can learn from.
Hi Tan. Great book choice. Your reflection on this book and way of interpreting it made clear your full understanding of the text. The exercise you had planned would convey the meaning of the book and make clear to the reader the two mindsets an individual can occupy and allow them to decide which is the right for them.
ReplyDeleteHey Tan,
ReplyDeleteThe book you chose sounds really interesting and I would love to know which mindset I have since I am an athlete. I am really interested in reading this book now to see the difference between the two. I wished you would've provided more details in your answers so that I can get some info from the book.
Hey Tan, nice post. I read the same book and I enjoyed it. I related it to class in the same way as you did. It is important to properly deal with failure emotionally and maturely. One thing I liked about the book is how Dweck makes a point to say that having a growth mindset is something to be worked at. It is a conscious decision.
