Forming An Opportunity Belief

Forming an opportunity belief (4A)

1.)   I believe that inaccurate time for getting on and off of buses can cause people to become frustrated. Thus, I believe that an improved app or a new app should be created that informs the rider of the exact location of the buses, how many people are on the bus, and accurately as to when the buses will depart and arrive.
2.)   The unmet need in this situation is not having an accurate answer as to when the bus will be arriving. People who ride the bus especially college students who are trying to get to class on time and try to get as much sleep as possible get frustrated when the app misinforms them of the time. I think this need always existed and people are trying to create new system or app that can accurate tell the time of buses arrival and departure, however, most of the app developer still has issue trying to perfect this kind of app. As of right now people are trying to work around this problem by either going to the bus stop extra early or using a different bus. Taking all of this into consideration, I am 75% sure that this opportunity exists.
3.)   Prototypical customers

                   Jose
                   William

Kailynn
What is the exact nature of the need?
To get to class
When do they become aware of the need?
When I decided to live off of campus. I only experience the need in the morning or when I am are trying to get home. However,  it would be nice if the app could give an alarm throughout the day or tell me about the any bus problem for the next day.
How long have they had the need?
Ever since arriving on campus
When did they first become aware of their need?
When the bus told her the incorrect time as to when the bus would be arriving causing her to miss her morning class.
How are they currently addressing their need?
By going to the bus stop earlier to not miss the busses that can take her to campus or hope on another bus, however, it can be confusing.
How satisfied would they be with the solution?
I would be very satisfied with the solution.

Reflection: By interviewing Kailynn, I learned that not only is it about the time and location of the buses but the app should allow communication between the rider and the bus system itself. This was one aspect of my opportunity that I did not think about and did not even consider. After conversing with Kailynn, I am adding something new to my opportunity.

Jose
What us the exact nature of the need?
To get to places off campus but “I don’t think it (the rider app) is very good”
When do they become aware of the need?
I learned about the bus one month before coming to the campus. I did not use bus before coming to UF.
How long have they had the need?
Whenever I needs to go outside of campus. But today was the first day that I used the bus.
When did they first become aware of their need?
Today
How are the currently addressing their need?
I use google maps instead because it is smoother and the rider app look like something on an android and not iphone.
How satisfied would they be with the solution?
Yes and no it would be good, however, when using the app it should be smoother. And should not look like and iphone (would not pay for the app) “it should be included in the tuition”.

Reflection:By interviewing Jose, I learned that more and more students are seeking out buses as one of their main way of transportation, thus there is an increased for the existence of my opportunities. Once again, Jose brought up some points that I have not consider before such as the app's performance. The opportunity should not only focuses on adding new features but should focuses on enhancing the overall performance of the app.

William
What us the exact nature of the need?
Do not really ride it but will ride it from time to time to go places that are far.
When do they become aware of the need?
When going to places that are far from the dorm. Also, I think the app needs to measure the occupancy and game day and increasing the bus
How long have they had the need?
When he got to UF
When did they first become aware of their need?
Because my friend was complaining about the incorrect time so I have a negative view  of the app and riding the bus all together.
How are the currently addressing their need?
I would go earlier and track multiple routes which is slightly inconvenience
How satisfied would they be with the solution?
Yeah, “120%” satisfied with the new app or the improved app. (would not pay for the app)

Reflection: By interviewing William, I learned that negative opinion can cause other to not want to use the app or even ride the bus altogether, causing a decrease in the need for this opportunities.

7.) How much of your original opportunity is still there?
I believe that 50% of the opportunity is still there. Customer would utilize the improved app and they would utilize the bus more.
Do you believe that your new opportunity is more accurate than when you started?
I do believe that my new opportunity is more accurate compared to when I started. The new opportunity focuses on a lot of different aspects that greatly improve the original opportunity. Thus, I now know where to exactly focus my attention in this new opportunity.
How much do you think entrepreneurs should 'adapt' their opportunities based on customer feedback? (In other words, is there a trade-off between adapting and staying firm?)
I think that entrepreneurs should adapt their opportunities based on customer feedbacks that pertain to their opportunity. Costumer’s feedback can make you adapt your opportunities and makes the product even better and more useful. In addition, negative feedbacks allow you to fix that aspect of your opportunity to greatly improve it in the future.

  1. I liked your idea of making bus transportation more accurate. So many people depend on public transportation to get around and their bosses could care less if the bus was late and still fined a way to fire you. I also liked your answer for if entrepreneurs should adapt or not. I wrote along the same idea and that entrepreneurs needs to adapt to minor details about their product but we need to keep our vision strong. Its like a road. The road will go from point a to point b but maybe it needs a stop sign, or a street light, little details to make that road better!

  2. I enjoyed your post! I found your idea to be useful. Bus transportation is crucial. It is the worst when the bus arrives and it is full and/ or not on time. This can cause us to become late which leads to other consequences. I answered the question on if entrepreneurs should adapt their opportunities based on customer feedback in the same manner as you did. It can definitely improve the product at hand and fix any negative aspects of the product.

  3. Tan, this is a great opportunity belief. Everyone at UF has at some point been frustrated because of the the Ryder app's inabilities. Be careful not to pitch a solution right away though. I'm not so sure how the app can be approved upon. This is because delayed busses are often due to human traffic, which cannot easily be tracked. The opportunity, though, definitely does exist.
